I was planning to go the Gaya Street library but found out it moved somewhere (they move to Suria Sabah mall, 4th floor) so I stop near by and saw the opening of Gaya Street 12th Anniversary where Mayor of KK were also there. So I drop by and join the ceremony!

Later, I met Richard Nelson Sokial, the writer of The Sabah Arhitectural Heritage Blog and also one of the Atkinson Tower guy who fight the tower's freedom!

It such a wonderful day walking solo around gaya street and experience the day especially with the VVIP and became 'part of the press'~ LOL

I chat with my aunt (my dad's sister) this morning who lives in LA who is currently work with US Navy and we were so excited dreaming about visiting each other. I been dreaming to visit this awesome country since I can remember. But the reality is; I have to spend about three thousand ringgit just for my air ticket! Ouch! So, the only way we have is save some money ~~and try some luck to win a lottery~~.

So, I don't know what shall I do during this free days. Maybe daydreaming with guitar or more drawings (hopefully I have some privacy to do so).

Photoshop tutorial - Define Pattern

Phew! It took 4 hours for me to complete this tutorial. Hope this can help you a lot! Feel free to drop a comment if you got any question or ideas to share.

Don't forget to share your artwork with me when you've learned this!

Okay, here's the steps!

1) Get anything you want to paint from anywhere; mine, I draw on a piece of paper with pencil and scan it into my computer. So, here's the scanned ribbon.

2) Download any pattern you like anywhere in google. But I have my own favorite collection here. You can use them by right click on the image > Save image as and directly save it in your document. But remember, click the image first to ENLARGE it otherwise, the image that you'll save will be just the thumbnail and it wont look good later!

3) Once you grabbed your favorite pattern online, open them in Adobe Photoshop. Now, I'm using Photoshop CS4. To open in Photoshop, simply click: File > Open and locate your pattern in your file.

4) Then, click Edit > Define Pattern just exactly what the diagram shows below:

5) As you clicked it, a box will appear. This box is for you to give your pattern a name so you can remember it at time you want to use it later.

6) This pattern, I named it as 'mystrawberrypattern_by finieramos.jpg'

7) Then, you may close this pattern file by clicking the X button just exactly like on the diagram below:

Okay. Now were're done defining our pattern!

8) Next step, we are about to put the pattern onto our scanned drawing. In Photoshop, click File > Open and locate your scanned drawing.

This is my scanned ribbon that I draw just now. Now it's in Photoshop.

9) Then, you go to your Layer Panel and right click the Background layer. Click Convert to Smart Object. If you can't find your Layer Panel, click Window (the one that I pointed in red right on the diagram below) and make sure the Layer is checked by clicking it to make your Layer Panel appear. You can also click F7 to get the Layer panel shown.

10) When you got it, the layer called Background will automatically rename as Layer 0 with the other panels active and clickable. So now, click Normal drop list and choose Multiply.

11) Now, click Rectangle tool on your tool bar. If you can't find your tool bar, check it on the Window menu just as how you find your Layer panel. If you there's no Rectangle tool in your tool bar, hold your mouse in the Shape icon and the list of the shapes will appear. The shortcut of this tool is U.

12) Create a rectangle shape on your drawing. Then, you will see that the rectangle is covering your drawing. That's because the rectangle's layer is on top of your drawing's layer (which is named as Layer 0) on the Layer panel.

13) To make the drawing visible as well as the rectangle shape, drag the rectangle's layer down so Layer 0 can be on top of the shape. Faham ka? Heheh...

Now you can see the transparency. Because of the Multipy setting that we've done one step no 10.

14) Now, double-click on Shape 1 layer (1) then Layer Style box will appear (2). Click on Pattern Overlay (3) so the setting will appear. Click Patterns button (4) and the list of patterns will pop out. Scroll down the list until you see your pattern that you created on the beginning of our step. (5) Did you remember my pattern's name called mystrawberrypattern_by finieramos.jpg? So here we go!

Click on your pattern then click OK button (6). You can see the changes straight away (7).

You can also set your pattern size at the same place. Check the diagram below. Whenever you made changes, you can see the live preview on the stage.

15) After you satisfy enough with the pattern style. Click OK button. Then, right-click on Shape 1 layer on the Layer panel and click Convert to Smart Object.

Remember! Once you convert the shape to Smart Object, you will no longer can change the pattern's settings. So, make sure you satisfy enough before make the conversion. But don't panic, Edit > Undo can save your panic.

16) As your shape converted to a Smart Object, click on the corner of the pattern on the stage just as how you want to resize it. Then right-click on it to make a list box appear. You can choose either on that I've circled in red there. But I usually use Warp so I can reshape the shape freely. Try it.

17) This is how its gonna be when you warp it. You can reshape it just like a plasticine. Once you happy with the shape, click the button that I pointed in red shown on the diagram below.

The reason why I WARP the shape is to make it even more realistic. You can see it in you real life shirts, the crumples of your clothes will make the patterns aligned freely.

18) Now, we want to remove the outer parts over the drawing. Click your Shape 1 layer and click Add vector mask on the bottom of the Layer Panel. Then, a white square thing will appear next to Shape 1 just exactly how it shown on the diagram below.

19) Then, your Brush tool to erase the unwanted part of the pattern. Make sure you are now in the Mask layer. You can get a Brush tool in the Tool box. Right-click on the stage to set your brush settings like the diameter of the brush and the hardness.

Now you can start erasing the unwanted part. Click the diagram above to read the notes so you won't face any extra errors or problems. Hope it works.

Check the diagram above. Notice the Mask box of the Shape 1 layer? The dark spot of it is the part where you erase the unwanted extra patterns using the Brush tool.

If you accidently erased the wanted part of the pattern, simply CTRL-Z to undo it OR just click X on your keyboard to change the brush masking and start un-erase the part. Click X again to continue erasing the other parts. Well, that's the shortcut key.

Repeat step no. 11 to continue patterning the other side of your drawing!

Tada! See, my ribbon is already patterned with the strawberry pattern that I downloaded from my collections online! Did you notice there's a new layer there called Shape 2? I made it as how I made the Shape 1 layer in step no.11.

But wow! We haven't done yet. It may look pretty but not realistic enough! Now we need to add some effects by adding shadows on it.

20) To add shadow, create a new layer. Still on the bottom of Layer 0. Make this new layer as Multiply (check step no. 10).

21) We use brush tool to make the shadow. Just as how you apply shadow effect when you're painting traditionally on a piece of paper.

22) Choose a similar color of the pattern. But a bit darker. Well, understand the shadow principal in painting. To change the color, double-click on the color box and start choosing the color from the Color Picker box.

Make sure you are painting on Layer 1!

23) Before start painting the shadow, make sure your Brush setting is suitable. Here, the most important settings are the Opacity and the Hardness of the brush. So, start painting!

You can change the Opacity of the brush if you didn't see the color appear.

Now, see the differences with and without the shadows.

Okay, now you can try it by yourself! Try do on a simple object first then when you master enough with all those steps, you can start painting a complex drawing. Do more research and experiments and you will find more cool stuffs!

Beret and boots

My addiction to Photoshop's 'define pattern...' is really-really serious now. I download patterns anywhere and paint them straight away on her clothes. It seems like I want to put patterns all over her's but in fashion design rules, it may look a bit awkward.

By the way, look at her beret. It's kinda new and nobody ever try this way with hijab here in Malaysia (maybe because of the hot weather around). I was inspired from here.

Well, fashion has no limitation as well as imaginations. As long as it enough to cover our aurat, we still can have them.

I was a predator.

I could barely think through it.

My thoughts raged, resisting control, incoherent.

For one second, the heat of her skin burned into mine.

Jalan Gayang, Tuaran, Sabah (North Borneo)

This is why I can't live away from Sabah, this beautiful land below the wind.

Some says that this small town called Tuaran about 20km from the main city of Kota Kinabalu were a bit downtown and so-called-back-to-the-future place. But for me its a very peace place (to find inspiration). We usually spend some time to drive along this ~~haunted~~ empty road of Gayang (Jalan Gayang) crossing the Mengkabong river which is facing the majesty mount of Kinabalu after office's stresses.

Local people said that the view of mount Kinabalu that can be seen from this river is the inspiration of the mount Kinabalu shape that can be seen on the Sabah flag because if you're lucky enough to see the shape clearly, its really well-shaped with a very nice face.

But at time we took these photos, the day was good but it was getting dark and we're avoiding to pass the road in a total dark because its totally haunted. Well, you know. When there's a lot of trees without anyone living there, something might be staying there.

Whatever it is, it's a very wonderful scenery that you have to experience yourself especially when the sky is about to turn orange and dusky.

New layout

It seems like I'm not really satisfy with my yesterday's drawing I did for the header. So I made the new one which looks like fit enough with its position as a header. I also coded everything and change almost everything (but it doesn't look so obvious, unless you are my hardcore blog reader).

Look at the sketch! The ribbon wasn't on her bite thus showing her lips and nose (ugly). Luckily the end result was really-really stunning! Thanks for the support everyone!

I don't know but so far I'm happy now (because I am mostly envy with your blog designs out there and the funny thing is I'm a web designer!). So I've tried my best to design everything so I won't feel that way. Well, we'll see how long I will be happy with how it look as now. Enjoy!

Back to school

Hello kids! Welcome back to school! For those who new in school's environments, welcome! School is not a bad place to stay for the rest of your days, it's actually the best part in your life that you will never ever forget.

Well, I am damn-ly missed my school days. It was such a great moments in my life with great friends and cool teachers. Sneaked out from school somewhere deep in the estate (my school was in the middle of the oil palm estate) and jump into the estate pond illegally with friends and when our names called during the school meetings, we all punished badly because of our naughtiness.

While during high school, learnt to fall in love an got hurt many times. Learnt to be a good friends and helped each other. Everybody tried to be the best attention at school and kept crushing and admiring boys (LOL).

College life aren't the best as high school where I learnt everything about life away from families, tried to be independent and choosing the right friends to hang out with in this big city.

Today, I'm now as a working girl, sitting on my desk working and working stuffs endlessly and get paid every end of months!

Well, kids... Don't be afraid to show your talents and never fear to fall and get hurts over and over again because that's the key of successes.

What a very epic photo!

Everyone is writing about this new year eve of 2012. Their wishes, their celebrations, their 2011 summaries since few days ago while I'm a bit out of date about this.

I didn't turned off my calendar and I did have some home celebration with his family at their home. Just as simple as I loved. Well, HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

My conclusion of this brand new year is; OMG! This earth is getting older and older! Okay, stop laughing at me now. Well, I didn't believe those science fictions and Maya's belief but I believe in my belief.

It wont happen today, this year. But it will happen at anytime. Just be prepare.

How I draw?

Some asked me how do I draw human figure perfectly? Actually I didn't. Not as perfect as other professionals. But drawing female's, still I can sigh happily for it compare to figuring male's on my sketch papers.

I usually pick inspiring 'uncovered' photos to trace back their poses and skeletons of figures. That is why I love these photos. I'm not a pervert, I'm an artisan.

By picking up sexy poses of photos, I do tried to draw male figures with six packs but I always fail. They always looks like a gay ~~or an ugly K-Pop gays~~. Tried a lot but God's creations of six packs are so perfect and there is no way for me to trace them back with my pencil.

When it comes to draw females, I feel like a fluffy white clouds. I don't know. I've been practicing drawing female figures since I'm into Sailor Moon when I was 11 years old. The manga taught me a lot! Maybe because I'm a female and familiar with female's curves (of course) so it makes me a lot more easier.

Then, as soon I ~~mastered~~ completely done with the manga styles. I tried to stop (tracing Nippon's comic styles) and convert to mature~~d content~~ styles as inspired by Dave Stevens and Adam Huges.

It was in a year of 2000s when I was completely into these serious figure's curves. But the manga style still on it a bit which sometime makes me really annoy with it. With the combination of my inspirations mentioned above, I tried and tried until I satisfy enough. Yet, still until today!

One day, my sister and some of my fans request me to draw more into Islamic style such as those in Ana Muslim local comic/magazine for example and lots more outside which are into Islamic perspective. So I went out do some research. Oh no! I found that most of comic style today were colonized by the Nippons too as others as well! Seems like they are so good in colonizing ~~since WWII~~ which is I don't really agree with.

This is too much. I decided not to complete it. Sorry

With two influences in me which are quite hard for me to get rid off, I won't stop try and try to mix them out without having to show any evidence of Nippon's manga style as what we can see everywhere today. In addition with sexy poses that Stevens and Huges influenced me a lot, I'm stuck in the middle of this scary situation for being a new Islamic illustrator when some of my artworks being rejected by some parties who wanted it to be in a proper way as ~~a shy~~ Muslimah. I know, but it's not as easy as drawing with eyes closed.

I'm still in a middle of converting my style to be more acceptable especially for Muslimah. Then I found Hana Tajimah with her covered fashion styles and her ~~daring~~ poses. I don't know. Certain parts are so amazing but certain parts seems like unfair for me (like why she can pose like that but my 'girls' cant?). I adore her a lot, of course.

So here I am trying to be balance between American and Nippon manga styles, daring and proper poses and universal and Islamic styles.

I did this perfectly. Took about 4 hours to finish. Compare to some I did before, which only took about half an hour to complete, this is totally detail. I used Cath Kidston's patterns as well as some few patterns found at google image.

It's not that I don't have anything to do at work, but as soon as we're turn down offline, I'll pick my pencil and paper and start drawing. So, what else I can say?

New place

I've moved to a new place. Much bigger, brighter and dreamy. I just can't wait to share it with you.

I was so ~~damn~~ busy since early of this month and might be much more busy by end of this year with all the works of big events in my office and also more upcoming freelance works to do.

It's a local myth of Borneo, the Balan-Balan. I did it in my own way, a beautiful lady with a curly fire hair just exactly how the folks believe, the flying fire ball at night searching for her pray.

My latest drawing, so far. I made it yesterday. It's him and I traced his portrait while he's bathing his car. I didn't expect it would be this perfect but we both happy with the result.

It's been a while I didn't play with this pieces and it's been years I've tried to draw his face perfectly and finally made it after five years!

Obsess with the packs thing and the Quileute stuffs. I edited it with the additional of russet brown texture and a tattoo just exactly like the poster below. LOL. Have a great weekdays.

Paper doll house

I've been wanting to share this since last week. A lot actually since I've been a way for so long. So, let me put up one by one.

Ignore the dirt. It was raining that time.

This shoots taken at Padini store at Warisan Square, Kota Kinabalu last week. While my friend choosing clothes, I took some shoots with this nice huge mirror.

The boots used to be my mom's. ~~But I beg her to give me~~. And notice the turban? I bought this (for myself) around RM15 somewhere around the Indian textile store since I think it might be a great fit as a hijab! And the long cardigan, I just really love it. Enough to cover our aurat, sisters!

I adore this house since the very first time I went in it. It's actually an inn called The Hook House designed by design tavern.

My sister's Wedding - Malay@Muslim Wedding Tradition (Akad Nikah ceremony)

Hello everyone. It's been a very busy weeks and I don't have a chance to blog-walking and not even writing stuffs here. It's Eid celebration (last 30th Aug) and also my 2nd sister's wedding on the 31th Aug. Really, it's a very tired day yet a very happy day to us.

Here, I won't write about what happened on that day because my sister already wrote them in her blog here for the akad nikah event. But, as requested by my dad (since some of our overseas relatives especially from my dad's side from Philippines whom aren't really familiar with Malay wedding traditions), I'm about to explain briefly hows Malay wedding goes

Okay, Malay culture are traced mostly from Muslim traditions (but still some are traced from other traditions like Indian, Chinese and ancient beliefs). The real wedding for Malays is quite complex but since my family aren't pure Malay (my mom from Indonesian Malay and my dad from Philippines), we try to make it simple yet still following the Muslim guidelines.

As other belief and religion, each couples will get a bless and vows for their wedding. In Malay/Muslim, we call it as Akad Nikah. During the akad nikah, there must be two witnesses (two adult males or two adult male with two adult females) and Wali (bride's father or male relative on the bride's father side).

Preparing and practicing the vows. This is the most important and excited moment. The bride and groom might be sweating or shaking during this ceremony over the vow! I don't know how it exactly like, but for sure it's really-really scary!

That's the sweating bride with white veil sitting nearby the stage with the bride's mom (my mom of course) to the company the shaking bride.

The vows will be declared by the groom with the witnesses of the wali and the witnesses. Once the wali and the witnesses agreed with the vow, the bride and the groom will be officially married with blessed.

I took this from the staircase. That's the groom (with black songkok/hat) with the Imam (with white kopiah/hat) and my dad as the wali (on purple) next to the Imam. The witnesses are the one with green and the other one whom next to the green one.

Old folk beliefs that during the akad nikah, all the single or un-married girls cannot sit nearby the ceremony because it might confusing or mis-vowed the groom! Blahahah!

After the akad nikah and the vows successes, it is now the couple officially married and declared as husband and wife.

The do'a to thank the successive ceremony and...

"You may now kiss your bride!"

No bride and groom without family blesses. Then, the newly wed couple will salam their parents and old relatives for the blessings.

The bride hug her mom (my mom of course) for the emotional feelings and blessing.

And that's the emotional bride's mother (my mom of course).

After the emotional blessing ceremony, the newly bride and groom need to complete their marriage certificate. Like signing and certifying the certs and all the stuffs.

Every happy new bride will always get a very precious gift from the groom. We call it as Mahar. Mahar is something precious from the groom for the bride that no one can have from any part of it. Which mean only the bride can use the mahar. Usually, the groom will give a money, but for my sister; her husband gave him a gold necklace as the mahar (of course we cannot share this necklace!) along with a couple wristwatches for them both and also the Quran.

After the important events successfully done, photography session will take place at the same time meal served for everyone.

Everybody wont miss to take a piece or two photos on the stage. Whoever can have a pose on it especially with the newly wed couple. But of course, family photo will be the first one.

Mist, Fog, Dust & Smoke

It's a very beautiful dreaming morning today. Although it just last for few hours, I'm glad that I walked on the wet morning grass this morning to the office (and the sun start to burn slightly outside the window as soon as I reach my desk to blog this).

Last night was awful at first but when midnight came, it's totally wonderful. Thanks to dad and my boy for helping me to get my ticket back to Sandakan a bit earlier although I've scheduled it on this Sunday. It's great.

The Mist of Forks

I think I am officially into the Twilight Saga's and I know I'm totally out of date. I just don't want to be so stereotype with some other girls (lol).

So, a friend who really into this since couple of years ago suggested me a page so I can see more people who really onto it too. It is a very great page with thousands Likers.

As written on my previous entry about this movie's review, I am totally in love with the mist of Forks (as seen on those images grabbed from the page). It is real and not an edited scenes to makes the story beautiful. It's the mist and the greens along the stories!

By the way, since I can't wait any longer for the next series (published couple of years ago as well and it's already in my sister's hardisk but need to wait till I go home to watch them), I've downloaded an ebook of the complete series of the story! I still can't believe myself that I've downloaded them since I've deleted them from my hardisk long time ago! Happily, I will stick with my cellphone to read the ebook whole day long! It's so beautiful!

I was a book-worm before but maybe I'm more into blogging today, I left my books with dust. Luckily human invented a solution (to save more trees) by creating an ebook so we can just simply read it anywhere we want digitally without having to worry about space or not-enough-hands-to-carry problem ~~also, we can just simply download them for free and spread to other to save money!~~

About the books, it is better than watching the movie. Like my friend said, "The movie will ruin all your imaginations from the books!" Yes. She is totally true. The details are more and readable rather than wondering from the characters expression on the screen. I think some of the players in this movie can't play well and making the scene seems not that pretty as written on the books.

Okay, this isn't that sexy enough compare to this; did it few years ago. Inspired from the romantic scene of Twilight movie where Bella and Edward got their first kiss in Bella's bed.

Imagination is unlimited when you draw. That's what I feel when I'm with my pencil and my drawing block. I don't want to limit my fantasy to get the best result. That's my opinion. It's just an opinion.

'Inspired from' sketch - part 1

I hate to admit this that this drawing is inspired from listening the the Twilight OST. But look at those awkward lines! I admit that I've been erasing them for hundred times. It's been a while I didn't spend my dreamy time drawing especially a couple characters like I used to during my young ages.

Twilight review

I was a quick wet boy, diving too deep for coins

All of your street light eyes wide on my plastic toys

Then when the cops closed the fair, I cut my long baby hair

Stole me a dong-eared mad and called for you everywhere

I found this from Twilight movie. This song played on the very last scene; their romantic dancing outside the prom party. I think this movie quite adorable.

Well, to be honest. I wasn't that obsess with this vampire-ly movie ~~as most girls do~~ today. This Twilight movie was released couple of years ago and that time I wasn't into stuffs like this (actually I do). But maybe because I don't want to be so stereotype with famous stuffs that time, so I just ignored it.

Right until last Sunday when I was bored to death. I checked my hardisk if there's any available nice movie to watch. So I choose this and - OMG! It was totally awesome!

About the movie itself, it's not about the hot and handsome heroes (but I think Jacob quite hot) but I fell in love with the background scenes. It's a foggy-deep-forest and an always-cold-and-foggy-season which makes the story line become adorably beautiful.

I adore Edward's room where it's just a simple 'music-store' without bed. And those glass windows with beautiful pine forest really-really makes me feel want to have that too.

Edward's room. I love this part where they played Debusse Clair de Lune. I loved this music since 13 years old.

Bella's room is adorable too. I love that orange and gloomy romantic light with Christmas light hanging on the wall. This part is quite romantic too. Their first kiss but didn't go that far. I wonder what's Edward think that time (I mean as Edward character on the movie). Maybe this vampire almost can't stand his hunger or what?

Romantic scene which is available for kids (I guess) with nice room.

The story lines? Well, it's quite okay. Awesome for this first series, maybe. I've asked my sisters' opinion about this series and they said okay but quite heavy on the next series. Some friends said its nuts and boring. Yeah, maybe (still don't want to be that stereotype). I can't say more about the next series because I haven't watch them. So, let me write about what I think about this first series.

It's; dreamy, cold, foggy, blue-green, bunch of gray clouds hanging, sweet (sometimes and they were like too acting, like not that romantically natural), dreamy, dreamy and dreamy. And non-sense too.

Ps: I don't know what language does the subtitle shown. I just listen to their dialog through head-phone. And YES I print-screened all these by myself.
